The detection of buried landmines using probing robots

چکیده
This paper presents a new approach to the detection of anti-personnel landmines which is based on the physical detection of landmines using a sharpened probe in a fashion similar to that employed by human deminers. Reviews of current techniques , proposed new sensor technologies, and current uses of robotic devices within landmine detection are presented. This is followed by a description of our proposed solution, a robot capable of performing the probing task, together with the results of the initial experiments. 1 Background: The landmine problem It has been estimated that more than 100 million active mines are scattered throughout over 60 countries in the world, and that more than 2,000 people are maimed or killed by mines every month 1,2]. Many anti-personnel mines are designed speciically to maim rather than kill as signiicant resources are required to care for people who are injured by such mines, and there is a signiicant psychological impact on fellow soldiers. Landmines have also been

Autonomous Probing Robots for the Detection of Abandoned Landmines
This paper presents a new approach to the detection of anti-personnel landmines which is based on the physical detection of landmines using a sharpened probe in a fashion similar to that employed by human deminers. The axial force applied to the probe is sensed as the probe is driven into the ground (at 30 degrees to the horizontal in order to avoid initiating the landmine), and the force infor...

متن کاملThe COMRADE System for Multirobot Autonomous Landmine Detection in Postconflict Regions
We consider the problem of autonomous landmine detection using a team of mobile robots. Previous research on robotic landmine detection mostly employs a single robot equipped with a landmine detection sensor to detect landmines. We envisage that the quality of landmine detection can be significantly improved if multiple robots are coordinated to detect landmines in a cooperative manner by incre...
متن کاملAutomatic Multiple Landmine Detection Using Gpr
The land mine crisis is all over frightening since there are presently 500 million unexploded, buried mines in about 70 countries. Governments are noticing this situation seriously since land mines are claiming the limbs and lives of civilians’ very day. A multiple of landmine extraction from the data which are obtained from the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Traditional algorithms targets on ...
متن کاملIR Thermography for the Detection of Buried Objects: A Short Review
Sub-surface buried objects, such landmines and archaeological artefacts, and the surrounding environment constitute a complex system with variable characteristics. As a consequence, the detection and recognition of these objects may be extremely difficult. IR thermography, which is widely employed in the detection of discontinuities in materials and structures, would be in principle suitable al...
